Know your Strengths and Unlock Your Potential
Mastering Your Unique Strengths to Skyrocket Your Business
“Do not try to be everything to everyone. Instead, be something to someone.” – Michael Porter.
This quote by Michael Porter, a renowned authority on competitive strategy, encapsulates the essence of focusing on your unique strengths to appeal to a specific target audience. It emphasises the importance of specialisation and the power of catering to the needs of a particular group rather than diluting your efforts to appeal to everyone.
As an experienced business coach and project manager, I’ve seen first-hand how understanding and harnessing your unique strengths can be a game-changer in attracting and retaining clients.
Knowing what sets you apart is crucial whether you’re a small business owner, a consultant, or an entrepreneur.
However, identifying these strengths can be challenging. Let’s examine some strategies to uncover your hidden gems and use them to elevate your business.
Deep Dive into Your Journey
Your journey and your past
The unique journey that you have taken to get to where you are today, and your past experiences are powerful tools. Your journey and past experiences have shaped who you are today.
Close your eyes and think about the last ten years of your life. Notice how much you’ve grown and evolved and how many challenges you have overcome.
Everything you’ve experienced brings value to your life and that of the people you are here to serve. Embrace your history – the good and the bad experiences because they all have built the human being you are today. And it is this road that you have travelled and all the experiences along the way that are your superpowers.
Reflect on Your Experience
Your journey is a treasure trove of insights. Reflect on your career path – where have you dedicated most of your time? The skills you’ve honed over the years are your silent warriors. Whether it’s your knack for strategic thinking, exceptional copywriting flair, or your rapport-building talent, these tools have propelled your career forward.
Celebrate Your Successes
Think back to your most significant achievements. What factors contributed to these triumphs? Was it your innovative approach, relentless pursuit of excellence, or ability to foster meaningful client relationships? Recognising these elements can help you replicate success in future endeavours.
Broaden Your Viewpoint
Embrace Soft Skills
Over my years of corporate experience, I’ve learned that soft skills are often the unsung heroes. How do you communicate with clients? Are you a problem-solver? These traits significantly influence your work ethos and client satisfaction. For instance, my commitment to openness, punctuality, detail and accessibility has been a cornerstone of my client relationships.
Reputation Speaks Volumes
What do past colleagues and clients say about you? Gather feedback and look for patterns. If you’re starting out or need more data, consider sending a survey to your ideal clients. Your clients’ perspective can provide invaluable insights into your strengths.
Positive Framing
Highlight the Best
Focus on what you excel at, not what you avoid. For example, instead of saying, “I don’t miss deadlines,” frame it positively: “I always meet deadlines consistently.” This positive framing can shift the narrative in your favour.
Benchmark Against Others
Do some competitive analysis and research services similar to yours. The results can be an eye-opener to what makes your offering unique. For instance, through my consulting services, I discovered that my personalised and detail-oriented approach set me apart from more generic offerings.

Useful Tools
Harnessing Porter’s Five Forces and SWOT Analysis to Identify Your Strengths
Understanding your unique strengths isn’t just about introspection; it’s also about recognising how you fit into the broader business landscape.
Michael Porter’s Five Forces framework and the SWOT analysis are powerful tools to aid this discovery.
Michael Porter’s Five Forces Framework
This model helps you understand the competitive dynamics within your industry. The five forces are:
- Competitive Rivalry: How intense is the competition in your industry?
- Supplier Power: What is the strength of your suppliers?
- Buyer Power: How much power do your clients or customers wield?
- Threat of Substitution: How easily can your products or services be substituted?
- Threat of New Entry: How easy is it for new competitors to enter your market?
By analysing these forces, you can identify areas where your unique strengths can give you a competitive edge. For instance, your exceptional customer service approach or expertise in a niche area could be a defining strength if competitive rivalry is intense.
SWOT Analysis: A Tool for Internal Assessment
SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. This analysis helps you understand your internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats.
- Strengths: These are what you do well, unique resources, or factors that set you apart. For example, your strengths may include a strong brand reputation, a loyal customer base, or special expertise.
- Weaknesses: These are areas where you can improve. Identifying these helps in mitigating risks and making strategic decisions.
- Opportunities: External chances to improve your performance (e.g., market growth, lifestyle changes).
- Threats: External elements that could cause trouble (e.g., new regulations, increasing competition).
Integrating Five Forces with SWOT
To fully leverage your strengths, integrate the insights from Porter’s Five Forces with your SWOT analysis.
For example, if the Five Forces analysis reveals a high threat of new entrants, your SWOT analysis might highlight your established brand (a strength) as a critical asset to leverage. Conversely, if buyer power is high, you might identify areas to improve customer relationships or diversify your client base to reduce dependence on a few large clients.
By combining these tools, you gain a comprehensive understanding of where your strengths lie and how to use them strategically to navigate the competitive landscape of your industry.
Actionable Steps
Take the following three steps to analyse and understand your strengths in detail.
- List Your Strengths: Compile a comprehensive list of your strengths, both known and discovered through this process.
- Utilise Feedback: Use client feedback in your marketing. Let your clients’ voices advocate for your strengths.
- Stay Up To Date: Regularly collect client feedback to stay in tune with your evolving strengths.
